All dogs in England will have to be fitted with microchips by 2016, authorities said. The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter is currently finding homes for the approximate 2 dozen abused and malnourished pit bulls found last week in a Shirley residence. The dogs were rescued upon a tip from a concerned neighbor. "The conditions that these poor animals were living in were simply appalling. I strongly encourage residents to donate to the shelter, whether you give supplies or your own time, to help these dogs life a better life than they already have." Anker is asking local residents, groups and businesses to set up collection boxes to donate cat and dog food to the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge. "The mild winter means ticks have started stirring earlier this year as they wake from their dormant state and begin searching for meals of blood," says George M. Walsh. "Another trend driven by a run of more temperate winters is a change in the types of ticks on Long Island, long [been] a hot spot of Lyme-carrying ticks. Lone star ticks, which are generally associated with Southern states, now outnumber black-legged ticks, or "deer ticks," by 10 to 1 on the Island, Paul Curtis, a professor of natural resources at Cornell University.
